Jasper, a notorious and ruthless pirate, takes center stage in this retelling with a slow and methodical build till about halfway when it magically bursts into life on land and under the sea. The real story begins as we are taken to a magical realm on an island. Aerowyn is still manipulating lives and so is someone else. The why and how remain quite vague.
Jasper is a very dislikable character… you know, the kind you love to hate. As he continues to put his awful attitude and selfishness to the forefront, the danger to Bellarose increases.
Gerard remains bound to Areowyn and is always at her side or close by. He has tremendous character growth, insight and an enormous change of heart. He does have many questions about his own happiness and destiny as do I. These questions, however, remain unanswered. Darn!
While Gerard is a bizarre retelling of Beauty and the Beast, Jasper’s story has threads of Peter Pan and…never mind. Not telling! You will have to read Jasper to find out! Reighhard is a master storyteller who takes the threads of well known and loved tales and reweaves them into an alternate fairytale reality. These storytelling threads are seamlessly and intricately stitched together to create a brilliant visual picture with words for the discerning pleasure of the reader. The ending had me guessing. I don’t know what Reighard has in mind for Quinn’s story. All I know is that everything isn’t what it seems. I love these Artowyn Tales!

Bellarose II is a prequel to Jasper and is best best read between Gerard and Jasper as the author intended.

Carlas books always make me think of old fables.
There's always a lesson in them.
I loved the twist and surprises I wasn't expecting. I like that she explains why people act the way they do. I don't want to give to much away. Highly recommend for anyone who loves classic fairytales with a twist.

I was very much looking forward to getting back into this series! There are some fun times to be had with how the author writes her books. They are like reading older fairytales which I do enjoy.
This book has multiple point-of-views and it works well since the characters aren’t always in the same place. I liked learning about Jasper who was one of the newest characters to be added. He is smug and definitely knows what he wants. I also liked learning more about Bella and Gerard. They are on different paths but it is nice to see how they are doing.
I do like how the author takes stories/characters we already know and makes them over with a new background and personality. It’s fun to see how creative she can be with the process.
Since the book is on the shorter side the plot does move quickly. Sometimes I wish that there was more time for setting development as I felt it lacked a bit where as in the first book it felt like there was a tad bit more to go off of. I also felt that the ending could have been drawn out a bit but I understand why it went in that direction.
There are still a lot of plot lines open and I am curious what the next book will bring.
